[song of week] 27th Oct 08

ocean of wine

One of the best bands around in the world today.

Pure Horsehair.

Garret and Shahzad of Pure Horsehair make enchanting music based on the need to express through art The path which led us to Pure Horsehair was nearly as windy as the journey that brought the two of them to New York. Our first encounter of the band was sat in a living room in Seattle watching a music video of theirs shot by a director from Portland. Two months and 4,000 miles later we were sat in a rehearsal space in New York being given their independently printed and released record, ”Audabe”. Their own journey has taken them to Penslyvania, Arizona, LA, Medical School and touring Europe with songstress Laura Viers.

In the months since acquiring “Audabe”, the fourth track, Dropout, has become my own personal mantra for life and art and something I long to see live.

“Can I dropout?
If I have all that is mine, i’d leave it behind.
 All I need i’ll find.
Or slowly lose my mind?
I’d rather dropout.
One day it will be that easy.”

The personalities of Garret and Shahzad carry the same energy and electricity that their live performances possess. This concoction is mesmerising, much like their debut full length. No computers were used in the creation of the album, as well as no middlemen used in its release. It is a fully independent project, of beauty and enchantment from start to finish.
Their music is lyrically deep, structurally interesting and breathes honesty, fun and warmth. A lot like their peronsalities.
